Saint Botolph's Church

Saint Botolph's Church is a historic parish church in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. The church is dedicated to Saint Botolph and is an active parish church in the Diocese of Lincoln. The church is located in the town centre on the east side of Church Lane, adjacent to the Market Place.

The current building dates from the 14th century, but it is believed that there was an earlier church on the site, possibly dating back to the 7th century. The church is built of limestone rubble with some ashlar dressings, and has a thatched roof. It is a Grade I listed building.

The church has a variety of architectural features, including a west tower, a nave with a south aisle, and a chancel. The tower has five bells, which date from the 17th century. The nave has a series of medieval wall paintings, which are believed to be some of the finest examples in England. The church also has a number of memorials and monuments, including one to the poet John Clare, who is buried in the churchyard.

Saint Botolph's Church is an important historic building in Boston, and is open to the public for visits. It is also an active place of worship, with regular services held throughout the year.

History

The first recorded mention of a church on this site dates from the 7th century, when the town of Boston was founded by Botolph, a monk from Ikanhoe. The original church was probably a wooden structure, which was later replaced by a stone church in the 10th century.

The current church building dates from the 14th century, and was built in the Decorated Gothic style. The tower was added in the 15th century, and the south aisle was added in the 16th century. The church was extensively restored in the 19th century, when the thatched roof was replaced with tiles, and the interior was refurbished.
